On Saturday, January 21, 2017, millions of women, men and children marched in solidarity for the Women’s March here in America. Hundreds of thousands more joined them across the globe with marches in London, Paris, Melbourne and Antarctica to name a few. Many of these women in these countries are still fighting for some of the same rights. But on Saturday their solidarity said “We stand with you, America, in the fight against the division and injustice that’s happening at the wake of your new political restructuring.”
I unfortunately could not get the day off to wave my sign and march alongside my fellow feminist. I was there in spirit and would have figured out something to do with this hair so I could wear one of the pink beanies. Nevertheless, this march went down in history as the biggest political protest to happen since Vietnam. People participated in roughly 400 marches taking place in the US and another almost 200 happening worldwide. Also here in the States, ZERO, yes ZERO arrest were made.
Now with the weekend turning into Monday many participants and on-lookers are wondering “What’s Next?” Well the Women’s March organization has started a campaign over the next 100 days, “10 Actions for the first 100 Days.” Over the next 100 days the Women’s March website will publish a new action to accomplish every 10 days. The first action: “Write a postcard to your Senators about what matters most to you – and how you’re going to continue to fight for it in the days, weeks and months ahead.” They have a pre designed postcard you can download from their website but you can also get creative and make your own. Over this next week I’m going to think about what matters to me most and have my postcard mailed out on Friday.
Whether you marched in person or in spirit, we will be able to tell our children of the day we came together to fight for justice and rights for women. I urge all of you to participate in “10 Actions for the First 100 Days.” What will you write your Senator about? Comment below and share your postcard with me on social media.
See you Next Monday!
